The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, has expressed serious concerns about the potential spillover of the ongoing conflict in Bawku into his region. His worries have intensified following recent security incidents in Walewale that are linked to the Bawku crisis, raising fears that instability could spread beyond its current epicenter. In a statement to journalists after a high-level stakeholder meeting, the minister emphasized that the security situation requires urgent attention to prevent any escalation within the Savannah Region.
He emphasized the importance of proactive security measures to address potential threats arising from the ongoing chieftaincy dispute. According to Salisu Be-Awuribe, the geographic proximity of the Savannah Region to conflict-prone areas makes it susceptible to infiltration by individuals looking to escalate hostilities. He specifically mentioned Walewale as an example, pointing out that the town has already experienced disturbances connected to the conflict.
“The spillover of the Bawku Chieftaincy issues is affecting the Savannah region. You know that if you pass through the Sandema area, you can come through to Daboya. “And because of that conflict, some of the traffic is diverted from the main route of passing through the North East regio. So if you don’t put in the necessary structures and define the system, some people can transpose the conflict from their area to our area here. And this is something that we are taking seriously.”
