I will hold the door open – Prof. Naana Jane

Vice President-elect of the Republic, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, has expressed her commitment to inspiring others through her historic ascent to the nation’s second highest office. During a victory event at her running mate’s office, she emphasized the importance of her role in Ghana’s history and assured that her “interesting journey” will have lasting significance.

“I will hold the door open. The method of opening the door, the method of holding the door open so others wish to travel that door, is what I’m implying. It is not a self-aggrandizing position. It is a position that empowers others,” she said of the vice presidency.

Professor Agyeman indicated that it was the National Democratic Congress that had worked the most towards inclusivity as she urged the audience to “come long” and, “work hard” in their various spaces.

Upon her election as vice president, she is set to become the nation’s first female vice president. Even before her party’s success in the presidential election, she had made history as the first woman to run on the ticket of a major political party. She expressed gratitude to the Mahama Campaign, party faithful and Ghanaians for the confidence reposed in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket.

The vice-president-elect is hardly a new face in government. During the erstwhile Mahama administration, she served as Minister of Education. She is expected to play a key role in the incoming administration as policies including the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank.
