Parliament’s Appointments Committee will on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, vet Majority Leader and Chairman of the Business Committee, Mahama Ayariga, following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama as Minister‑designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Mr. Ayariga is among three nominees scheduled to appear before the committee as part of Parliament’s consideration of recent presidential nominations to ministerial and judicial positions. Also slated for vetting on Tuesday are Dr. Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings, nominated as Minister‑designate for Environment, Science and Technology, and a candidate for appointment to the Supreme Court.
Outlining the timetable during proceedings on Monday, August 24, Mr. Ayariga indicated that the committee will review two ministerial nominees and one Supreme Court nominee on Tuesday, and subsequently vet two additional nominees for the Supreme Court on Wednesday, August 26. He noted that these schedules have been recommended by the Business Committee for adoption by the House.
Under the proposed arrangement, the committee will begin with the two ministerial nominees and one Supreme Court nominee on Tuesday before continuing with the consideration of two additional Supreme Court nominees on Wednesday, August 26.
Mr Ayariga’s vetting will provide members of the Appointments Committee with the opportunity to scrutinise his qualifications, experience, policy positions and suitability for the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs portfolio. The vetting forms part of Parliament’s consideration of a number of presidential nominations submitted for approval.
The process follows a request by Parliament’s Business Committee for a waiver of the Standing Orders requirement relating to the publication of presidential nominations. The waiver is intended to facilitate consideration of the nominations and allow the Appointments Committee to proceed with the vetting schedule without being constrained by the usual publication requirement.
Following the vetting, the nominees’ reports will be presented to the full House for consideration and approval in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
