The nuisance taxes JDM is expected to scrap within the first 100 days in office

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama promised Ghanaians to scrap some nuisance taxes in his first 100 days in office. It is recalled that during the campaign season, he expressed the view that these taxes placed a burden on Ghanaians and needed to be scrapped.

The taxes include E-levy, COVID levy, 10% levy on betting, emissions levy, and import duty on vehicles and equipment imported into the country for industrial and agricultural purposes. Although the Electoral Commission is yet to announce the certified presidential results, the presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice President Dr Mahamdu Bawumia has conceded defeat to Mr Mahama and assured him of a smooth transition period.

Dr Bawumia also congratulated the NDC for winning Majority seats in Parliament. General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress Fifi Kwetey has said that the party will use its Majority status in the next Parliament to advance the interest of Ghana and its people. He says they will use it responsibly.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, December 8, he said “We have secured a very significant majority and a majority that we aim to use responsibly and for the progress of the people of Ghana.

“The process as far as the presidential result is also concerned, we will urge the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa and her team to make sure the declaration is not unduly delayed because we know for a fact that nothing can be done about it because it is already in the bag.”
