Yaw Ampofo Ankrah Withdraws Death Threat Complaint Against Ayitey Powers; Court Discontinues Case

The Director‑General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has formally withdrawn the death threat complaint he lodged against former Ghanaian boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers. Following the withdrawal, Powers—who had spent a week on remand—was discharged by the Dansoman Circuit Court on September 2, 2026. He had been arrested on August 24 after a video circulated on social media allegedly showing him threatening Ankrah. Powers pleaded not guilty when arraigned on August 25.

A letter of withdrawal filed by the prosecution on September 2 led to the court’s decision to discontinue the case. Ankrah has further directed Powers to channel any grievances regarding his claim for $100,000 compensation—linked to the government’s cancellation of a September 2025 boxing event—to the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC).

The development comes after the GBIMC had called for Powers’ arrest and prosecution following the alleged threat. The GBIMC described the conduct as unacceptable and criminal, while insisting that Ghana boxing should not be held hostage by intimidation, thuggery or impunity. The committee also announced disciplinary proceedings against Powers. Following his release, Powers was captured in a video singing praise songs in the company of friends and family.

In the video, the former boxer, who is also a part-time musician, sang:

“Great God of wonders, you are the only God I know. There is nothing in this world my God cannot do.”
