Carlos Queiroz has affirmed that “The Mission Continues” after agreeing to extend his contract as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars. The Portuguese tactician will remain at the helm following an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), ending speculation over his future after the expiration of his initial four‑month deal.
The GFA confirmed the extension on Wednesday night, announcing that Queiroz will continue to lead the team into preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Appointed in April as a short‑term replacement for Otto Addo, Queiroz guided Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars advanced from Group L but exited in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1‑0 defeat to Colombia.
Despite the outcome, discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and Queiroz culminated in a renewed mandate for the veteran coach. Expressing pride in the decision, Queiroz described the opportunity to serve Ghana as both a privilege and a responsibility. “It is with immense pride and honour that I confirm my continuation as Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana.
“Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its incredible and passionate football people.” Reflecting on the World Cup campaign, Queiroz praised the players, technical team and federation for their efforts under challenging circumstances. He said their “courage, discipline and commitment restored belief, competitiveness and the Pride of a Nation”, while signalling that a new chapter has now begun.
The veteran coach sees the 2027 AFCON as an important step towards building a competitive Black Stars team capable of making an impact at the 2030 FIFA World Cup. “The Africa Cup of Nations is much more than our next destination — it is the golden gateway to building the Black Stars that will shine and proudly compete at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.”
Queiroz added that his ambition is to improve the team every day, unite the nation and fight for victories with passion, humility and pride. His message ended with a rallying call to Ghanaians: “One Team. One Nation. 35 Million Hearts. One Heartbeat. The Mission Continues.”
The 73-year-old brings vast international experience to the position, having previously coached Portugal, Iran, South Africa and Colombia, while also working as an assistant at Manchester United and Real Madrid. His first assignment following his reappointment will come in September, when Ghana face Ivory Coast and The Gambia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
