Seven bodies have been recovered from a collapsed mining pit at Manso Kaneago in the Amansie South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, where eight illegal miners were trapped while searching for gold. Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with the District Security Council (DISEC) and the Police, are continuing efforts to retrieve the final victim still trapped underground.
The incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Thursday when the mining pit suddenly collapsed while the miners were working. Authorities said approximately 12 miners were operating at the site at the time. Four managed to escape, while the remaining eight became trapped underground. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
NADMO officials, the Police and DISEC are expected to return to the site to continue the search and recovery operation for the remaining victim. The Municipal Chief Executive for Amansie South, Benjamin Marfo, told Citi News that he was leading a team to the site to gather more information and assess the situation. He said efforts were ongoing to determine what led to the collapse and the subsequent entrapment of the miners.
The seven recovered bodies have since been deposited at the morgue.
