Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, has urged candidates who were unsuccessful in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) regional executive elections to respect the verdict of delegates and remain steadfast in their commitment to the party.
His appeal came after the conclusion of the regional polls on Saturday, August 15, where delegates across the country elected new leaders to steer the party’s regional affairs ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to the media after casting his ballot, Mr. Nitiwul acknowledged the difficulty of electoral defeat but emphasized that contests inevitably produce both winners and losers. “Accept it that the people have spoken. If you win, you accept. If you lose, you accept,” he stated.
He further called on victorious candidates to show magnanimity by extending congratulations to their opponents, while encouraging those who lost to remain patient and await future opportunities to serve. Drawing from his own experience, he noted: “I have gone into elections seven times in this nation, for parliamentary elections. I have won six and I have lost one. So I know what it means to lose, and I also know what it means to win.”
The regional elections formed part of the NPP’s broader internal reorganisation following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. The exercise was largely peaceful, although some contests were closely fought, resulting in changes to the leadership in several regions.
Mr Nitiwul said the outcome should now be put aside as the party focuses on strengthening its structures and preparing for the next general election. He called on NPP members to put the broader interests of the party ahead of individual ambitions and work together towards securing victory for the party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Mr Nitiwul said party members must focus on the bigger picture of helping Dr Bawumia win the 2028 general elections and ultimately become President of Ghana.
