Galamsey fight: Political interference obstructing law enforcement – Duncan-Williams

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, has criticised the politicisation of the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. He argues that political considerations hinder authorities from effectively enforcing the law. According to the Archbishop, some politicians are hesitant to take decisive action against illegal mining out of fear of losing votes and parliamentary seats.

Speaking during a church service on Sunday, August 16, he emphasised that this situation has allowed lawlessness to persist, despite the significant damage illegal mining is causing to Ghana’s water bodies, farmlands, and food production. “Whenever someone tries to enforce the law, we turn everything into politics,” Archbishop Duncan-Williams stated.

He further explained that political leaders frequently face pressure and threats of electoral consequences when they attempt to implement measures that would affect illegal mining activities. “If you don’t do what I want, I won’t vote for you next time. As a result, many politicians, not wanting to lose their seats in parliament or see their party suffer, give in and let lawlessness continue,” he said.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams warned that the consequences of illegal mining extend beyond the current generation, jeopardising the future of children and grandchildren in the country. He expressed concern about the pollution of water bodies and the degradation of land used for agriculture, describing the situation as a threat to the country’s future.

He therefore called for prayers for Ghana, saying he was particularly concerned about how the country is managing its natural resources and the impact on future generations.
