The United States has introduced new requirements for nonimmigrant visa applicants, specifically those applying for F, M, and J visas, which are designated for academic students, vocational students, and exchange visitors. In a statement, U.S. officials emphasized that applicants should schedule their visa interview appointments at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality. It is important to note that visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Effective immediately, individuals applying for F, M, or J visas must also adjust the privacy settings on their social media accounts to “public” in order to facilitate vetting. The U.S. government explained that this measure is necessary “to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States under U.S. law.”
The announcement further noted that a recent Presidential Proclamation restricting the entry of foreign nationals from certain countries, which took effect on June 9, 2025, remains in force. “Applicants who are subject to this Presidential Proclamation may still submit visa applications and attend scheduled interviews, but they may be ineligible for visa issuance or admission to the United States,” the statement read. For full details on the new rules, applicants are encouraged to visit the official State Department website at travel.state.gov.
