The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has welcomed the government’s decision to allow BECE candidates to select their Senior High Schools (SHSs) after their results are released. The association believes this approach will enable students to make more informed choices.
Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, April 2, PRETAG’s Communications Director, Kingsley Animadu, noted that the policy would improve the school selection process. He explained that many parents struggle to match their children’s abilities with appropriate schools. “If results are released first, parents will have a clearer understanding of their ward’s performance and can make better decisions on which school to choose,” he said.
He described the plan to recruit 7,000 teachers as insufficient. “This is not something that warrants any special celebration. One must ask: how many trained teachers remain unemployed after completing school? Out of that number, which ones will be absorbed into the 7,000, and what criteria will be used? We are considering all those who have completed national service and are still at home. Will selection be based on year of completion or on regional considerations? In my view, the figure still falls short of expectations,” he said.
