Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, has characterised Kennedy Agyapong as the “unconventional candidate” the New Patriotic Party (NPP) requires to secure victory in the 2028 general elections. In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face program on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah argued that, following the natural rhythm of Ghana’s electoral cycle, the NPP would ordinarily not be expected to win in 2028.
This, he explained, makes the choice of a formidable candidate essential. “By the natural sequence of events, 2028 should not favour an NPP victory. That makes it an unusual election, and in such circumstances, an unconventional candidate is needed. For me, that person is Kennedy Agyapong,” he stated.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah emphasised that his support for Kennedy Agyapong is not based on personal ties. “He is not my friend. My priority is for the NPP to win power. This is not about personal preference; it is about who has the capacity to secure victory. In fact, I am even closer to Dr. Bawumia than to Ken Agyapong,” he explained.
Currently, five aspirants are in the race to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. The contenders include Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The party’s internal election is set to take place on January 31, across 277 voting centres, spanning all 276 constituencies and the national headquarters, where 214,812 delegates will cast their votes to determine who leads the NPP into the 2028 polls.
