Kufuor, Akufo-Addo to address NPP Delegates Congress virtually on Saturday

Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will address the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2025 National Delegates Congress virtually, according to party sources. The two former leaders are unable to attend the high-stakes Congress scheduled for Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, due to circumstances described as “beyond their control.”

This Congress will be the first major national gathering of the NPP since its defeat in the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. Delegates from all 16 regions are expected to come together to discuss strategies for repositioning the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Immediate past President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been out of the country for some time, is unable to return for the Congress. He was already outside the jurisdiction when the NPP’s National Council officially set the July 19 date, and party insiders confirm that he will not be able to make the trip back in time for the event.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who recently participated in the launch of the party’s ideological training centre, the Patriotic Institute, is also unavailable to attend the Congress in person. Sources close to the party’s top leadership confirmed that both statesmen will deliver their messages via video link during the event. The NPP National Council convened a meeting on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the Congress and was officially informed about the virtual addresses by the two former leaders.

This year’s Congress is expected to deliberate on several important constitutional reforms, including proposals stemming from the Mike Oquaye Committee and an outstanding amendment from the party’s 2019 Delegates Conference in Kumasi. The theme for the Congress, “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” reflects the party’s intention to reconnect with its grassroots, reassert its founding principles, and restore confidence among disillusioned supporters.
