La Liga president Javier Tebas has urged FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign, accusing the world governing body of “destroying the football industry.” Speaking to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tebas criticised several recent decisions, including World Cup hydration breaks, the extended half-time interval during the final, the delayed suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, and the potential introduction of a 64-team summer tournament.
Asked whether Infantino should step down, Tebas replied: “In my opinion, yes, I think his time is up.” He added, however, that Infantino retains the backing of national federations and described FIFA’s election system as “rotten at its core,” noting the absence of credible opposition candidates.
“The reality is he shouldn’t stay, but the current system ensures he won’t leave,” Tebas said. The Spanish league chief, who was in the United States to witness Spain’s triumph at the 2026 World Cup, remarked that many voices in America have expressed discontent with Infantino’s leadership.
“They say it, but then they do nothing. I don’t know what’s worse, the silence or the complicity, because those who stay silent are perfectly aware of the damage football is suffering.”
Infantino is expected to be re-elected for a fourth term at Fifa’s March congress, although Tebas believes Infantino could have been brought down as a consequence of his involvement in the case around Balogun.
