Thirty-four aspirants have been cleared to contest 11 executive positions in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional elections, following the withdrawal of one candidate who had earlier passed vetting.
Announcing the outcome of the two-day vetting exercise, Chairperson of the Ashanti Regional Elections Committee, Rita Talata Asobayire, said all 35 aspirants were initially approved, but Nana Adutwumwaa Boadi, who was vying for the Assistant Regional Secretary position, later stepped down, reducing the number of contestants to 34.
The elections, scheduled for 15 August at the Kumasi Sports Stadium, will fill 11 regional executive positions as part of the NPP’s nationwide reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general election. The regional chairmanship race will feature Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as Chairman COKA, a former Afigya Kwabre South Chairman, and Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a former Member of Parliament for Bantama.
The Communication Officer race is also a straight contest between two candidates. Four aspirants are contesting each of the First Vice Chairman, Youth Organiser and Nasara Organiser positions, while three candidates are vying for each of the Second Vice Chairman, Regional Secretary, Deputy Regional Secretary, Organiser, Women’s Organiser and Treasurer positions.
Asobayire described the vetting process as successful and urged all aspirants to conduct issue-based campaigns devoid of insults and personal attacks ahead of the polls. The Ashanti Region, regarded as the NPP’s electoral stronghold, is expected to host one of the party’s most keenly contested regional executive elections as it seeks to strengthen its structures before the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
