Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo, has addressed the increasing calls for his resignation after the Black Stars suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations. Addo, who has faced criticism for Ghana’s failure to qualify for next year’s tournament, affirmed that he does not intend to step down. “I’m not the person who can resign,” he stated. If I had done this, I would never have become a player or even a coach,” Addo stated after Monday’s game at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars’ failure to secure a single victory in the qualifiers, finishing bottom of Group F, has placed Addo’s future under intense scrutiny. The match saw Ghana end their campaign with three points, scoring just three goals in six matches. Despite a debut goal from Jerry Afriyie, Ghana’s defensive issues were evident, and a missed penalty by Mohammed Kudus in added time only added to the team’s woes.
With the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council meeting to review the Black Stars’ performances, Addo’s future remains uncertain. The GFA is expected to make key decisions about the national team’s direction after a dismal qualifying campaign.
