I only said we’ll seek additional IMF funds if need be – Ato Forson

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister-designate, has firmly denied claims that the new government will seek additional funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), despite Ghana’s current program with the organization. During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson explained that his comments had been misrepresented in media reports.

“I didn’t say I was going to request additional finance from the IMF,” he stated. “It’s inaccurate reportage. What I said was that we could request additional finance if the need arises.” Dr Forson emphasised that his remarks were merely speculative and contingent on future developments. The Finance Minister-designate explained that his statement was intended to underscore the importance of flexibility in managing the nation’s economic affairs.

Dr. Forson stated that while the option of seeking additional support from the IMF should not be completely dismissed, any decision to pursue such assistance would only be made if the situation required it. He urged the media to report his comments carefully to prevent any misunderstandings among the public. Dr. Forson reaffirmed his commitment to responsible financial management and pledged to explore all feasible options to ensure the country’s economic stability.
