GES Condemns Attack on Bawku SHS Teachers

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned the assault on two teachers and the destruction of property at Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region, warning that those involved will face both legal and disciplinary action. The incident occurred on Monday, June 15, 2026, when some students reportedly turned violent after strict enforcement of examination rules during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Two teachers sustained injuries, while several school facilities were damaged.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, GES described the conduct as unacceptable, unjustifiable, and inconsistent with the values of discipline, respect, and integrity that underpin Ghana’s education system. “Management views attacks on teachers in the course of their official duties as a serious breach of school discipline and a threat to the safety of staff of the Service,” the statement said.

The Service confirmed that security personnel have since been deployed to the school to restore order, with academic and examination activities continuing under strengthened security arrangements. The affected teachers are currently receiving medical care and support.

GES further disclosed that a full-scale investigation is underway in collaboration with security agencies to identify all individuals involved. It stressed that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law as well as internal disciplinary procedures.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety, discipline, and stability across all schools in the country.
