The National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) has demanded full accountability following the alleged sexual abuse of a 14‑year‑old autistic student at Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS). The Council commended the swift response of the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Upper East Regional Police Command. Two suspects — 38‑year‑old Elvis Adongo and 72‑year‑old Adams Nyaaba Iddrisu — have been arrested, while GES has interdicted two school watchmen linked to the case.
The Ministry has also directed investigations, provided medical and psychosocial support for the victim, and ordered the restoration of her boarding status. However, NCPTAs insists that these measures must extend beyond immediate interventions to deliver justice and lasting reforms.
It is calling for nationwide vetting and auditing of school security personnel, including background checks, age and fitness assessments. The Council further demands mandatory child protection training for all school staff, with special emphasis on safeguarding students with special educational needs.
The NCPTAs has further urged the Attorney-General, prosecutors and the Judiciary to ensure the suspects are diligently prosecuted under Ghana’s laws. It says the case must not be allowed to fade away, stressing that the victim deserves protection, dignity and justice.
The group has also urged PTAs across the country to work with schools and the GES to strengthen safeguarding measures and ensure safer learning environments for all students.
