The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted two watchmen at Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School following allegations that they sexually assaulted a student. The suspects have been arrested and handed over to the police, who are investigating the matter.
According to GES, the victim is a special needs student on medication who reportedly suffered a relapse on the day of the incident and required medical attention. It was during this vulnerable period that the alleged assault occurred.
In a statement signed by Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, on Thursday, 20 August, the Service stressed that it is treating the allegation with utmost seriousness and has initiated immediate steps to ensure thorough investigations. “Thorough investigations into the matter are currently ongoing,” the statement noted.
GES further indicated that the two watchmen will face appropriate sanctions under its Code of Conduct and the laws of Ghana should the allegations be substantiated. It also warned staff against any behaviour that could put students at risk or undermine their safety, dignity and wellbeing.
“The Service will not tolerate any conduct that compromises the safety and wellbeing of students,” the statement said. The development is likely to raise fresh concerns about the safety and protection of students in boarding schools, particularly those who may require additional care and support.
The GES has assured parents, guardians and the public that the case is being handled with the seriousness it deserves as the police investigation continues.
