Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) will resume the spillage of water from the Weija Dam starting Wednesday, September 9, 2026. This decision comes after the dam’s water level rose to 45.2 feet due to heavy rains upstream and ongoing rainfall across the Densu River catchment area. GWL has indicated that the water level is approaching the critical threshold of 46 feet, making it necessary to release water in a controlled manner as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.
In light of this, GWL has advised all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate their communities in advance of the spillage. Residents are urged to remain alert to official directives and to avoid engaging in activities that could put them at risk as authorities prepare for potential evacuations. The communities identified as being at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding areas.
The company has called upon the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), relevant District Assemblies, traditional authorities, assembly members, residents’ associations, and other stakeholders to take necessary precautionary measures in preparation for the evacuation. GWL is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as conditions change. The safety of residents remains their top priority, and they appeal to the public to cooperate with authorities and comply with evacuation directives.
