ECG announces four-day power outages in Teshie-Nungua for transformer upgrade

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced planned power interruptions in parts of Teshie and Nungua as it undertakes a major transformer upgrade to improve electricity supply in the area. In a public notice, the power contribution company said the exercise forms part of the government’s ongoing Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme aimed at enhancing power reliability.

“The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) wishes to inform the general public, particularly customers within the Teshie and Nungua enclaves, of ongoing works under the Government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme,” an excerpt of the statement read. The project will involve upgrading an existing transformer at the Teshie-Nungua Primary Substation from 20/26MVA to a higher capacity of 30/39MVA.

ECG explained that the upgrade “is aimed at improving power supply reliability and reducing system overloads within the network.” The works are scheduled to take place over four days, from Monday, April 27 to Thursday, April 30, 2026. As part of the process, residents and businesses in the affected areas will experience scheduled outages. “To facilitate the safe and efficient execution of the project, there will be phased and scheduled power interruptions within the Teshie-Nungua catchment area,” the statement noted.

ECG added that the outages will be implemented in rotational groups (A–E) across the four days, with each group experiencing interruptions lasting between five and six hours, depending on the phase of work.

Several areas, including Teshie Zongo, Lekma Hospital, Teshie First Junction, Grada Estates, Century Road, and parts of Nungua, are expected to be affected at various times during the exercise. Despite the inconvenience, ECG assured customers that the project will deliver long-term benefits, including increased capacity and improved service quality.

The power company stated that the upgrade is expected to “increase power supply capacity within the Teshie-Nungua area,” “reduce system overloads and equipment failures,” and “minimise the frequency and duration of outages.” ECG acknowledged the disruption the exercise may cause but stressed its importance.

“ECG acknowledges the inconvenience these temporary interruptions may cause and assures customers that the exercise is essential for delivering long-term improvements in electricity supply,” the statement emphasised. Detailed outage schedules, the company said, will be communicated through its official platforms.
