Passenger rail services on the 15-kilometre Kojokrom–Sekondi–Takoradi line will resume on Friday, April 24, ending a suspension that has been in place since 2023. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe announced the relaunch during an inspection of railway redevelopment works on the Kojokrom–Manso line on Thursday.
He explained that the reopening forms part of the government’s broader effort to revitalise the railway sector under President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda. The line had deteriorated due to years of inadequate maintenance, resulting in the halt of services. Mr Nikpe noted that rehabilitation works have now been completed, paving the way for trains to return to operation.
The restored service is expected to ease travel for commuters within the Kojokrom–Takoradi municipality and surrounding areas. “The lack of care and maintenance was brought to a close in 2023 to 2024,” he said. “With the President’s directive, we have repaired and revamped the line and we are relaunching it to serve passengers again.”
The Minister also addressed concerns over unpaid wages in the railway sector, stating that the government has already cleared eight months of salary arrears inherited from previous periods and is on track to settle all outstanding payments by the end of April. The resumption of services marks a significant step in restoring rail transport as a reliable option for passengers in the Western Region.
