A month-long ban on drumming and noise-making will take effect in Accra on Monday, May 4, in anticipation of the annual Homowo Festival. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced that this restriction will last until June 4 and will be enforced throughout its jurisdiction in accordance with the customs of the Ga State. This ban is observed annually within the Ga Kingdom as part of the preparations led by traditional leaders for the Homowo Festival, a significant cultural event celebrated later in the year.
In a statement to Citi News, the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, mentioned that authorities have implemented measures to ensure strict compliance with the ban. “A task force has been formed to ensure compliance,” he said, adding that the exercise is aimed at maintaining peace, harmony and public order during the period.
Residents, churches, mosques, pubs and event organisers are expected to comply with the directive, which traditionally prohibits activities such as drumming, use of loudspeakers and other forms of excessive noise. Authorities say the measure is essential to preserving cultural values and ensuring a peaceful build-up to the festival, which commemorates the history and resilience of the Ga people.
