Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to shun tribal and religious politics as the party gears up for its internal processes ahead of the 2028 general elections. The NPP’s 2024 Vice Presidential candidate cautioned that divisive rhetoric during internal campaigns risks reinforcing negative stereotypes about the party and diminishing its national appeal among Ghanaian voters.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, January 10, 2026, following his participation in Hajia Samira Bawumia’s campaign tour in the Manhyia South Constituency, Dr. Opoku Prempeh voiced concern over what he termed the rise of creeping bigotry within the party.
“This is a party that has been branded tribal; we cannot perpetuate it,” he stated, noting that careless comments by some party members only reinforce claims that the NPP is an ethnically driven political organisation. He insisted, however, that such a label does not reflect the true values of the party.
NAPO underscored that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is rooted in democratic ideals built on shared values and a common humanity, rather than divisions of ethnicity, religion, or gender. He highlighted that democracy thrives on individual choice and equal participation, reinforcing the principle of “one man, one vote.”
Using the platform, he reiterated his unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he described as a leader with the experience, clarity, and broad national appeal needed to secure victory for the party. He urged members to rally behind the NPP in unity, setting aside personal preferences for the greater good.
