Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana and Quiz Mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), has encouraged women to make their own choices regarding marriage and motherhood, free from societal pressure. Speaking on Today’s Woman on TV3, she emphasised that while motherhood has been a meaningful part of her own life, it is not a prerequisite for every woman.
“Motherhood gives meaning to all that we do, and it helps us understand our purpose,” she said. “However, not every woman needs to become a mother biologically. We can all nurture others in our own ways, and hopefully positively influence the lives of those around us. Biological motherhood is ultimately a choice.”
Prof. Kaufmann also urged women not to feel obligated to become wives simply to conform to societal expectations. “Not every woman should feel compelled to be a wife, and that’s perfectly acceptable. Society may pressure you regardless of your choice.
What’s most important is to reflect on your own life and make decisions that you are comfortable with—not ones made to please others. No matter what path you choose, there will always be people who won’t be satisfied, so it’s crucial to find peace within yourself.” She advised young girls to identify the impact they want to make and remain committed to pursuing it. “Figure out your contribution to the world, work really hard at it, and enjoy the journey.”
