Kudjoe Fianoo, a former member of the Black Stars Management Committee, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to appoint Winfried Schäfer as interim coach of the national team ahead of the World Cup. His appeal follows the dismissal of Otto Addo after a series of poor performances, including a 2-1 loss to Germany in a friendly match in Stuttgart that sealed his exit. In an exclusive interview with Kessben Sports, Fianoo stressed the urgency of the situation, warning that time is running out as the tournament draws near.
He suggested that Schäfer, currently serving as the GFA’s technical director, should be entrusted with the team on a temporary basis. According to Fianoo, Schäfer’s deep knowledge of Ghanaian football makes him the right candidate to stabilise the squad in the short term.
“There’s no time to waste,” Fianoo stated. “The technical director understands the Ghanaian football scene, and I think it makes sense to appoint him as interim coach while we take our time to find the right long-term manager for the Black Stars.” His comments reflect the growing concern that Ghana cannot afford the luxury of a prolonged coaching search, given the fast-approaching international competitions.
Fianoo also expressed concerns over Ghana’s tendency to appoint new coaches on a frequent basis, a pattern he believes is harming the national team’s development. “We are becoming a country that changes coaches every year,” Fianoo said. “This instability is not good for the team’s future. We need to carefully assess the situation and choose a coach who can help the Black Stars in the short, medium, and long term.”
