A coalition of state agencies has launched an urgent probe into a mass fish die-off at the Tema Shipyard, cautioning the public against consuming seafood from the affected waters. In a press release dated April 9, the Food and Drugs Authority, Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the incident was first detected on April 6.
“The four institutions jointly responded immediately and secured the site. The cause of the incident is under urgent investigation,” the statement noted. Authorities revealed that the dead fish were discovered “within a 50-metre radius of the main unloading ramp,” after security personnel spotted them between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
A rapid-response team made up of FDA inspectors, police officers, and Tema Port officials has since been deployed to the scene to determine the cause. “There is no evidence so far of deliberate sabotage or an immediate widespread health emergency,” the statement clarified.
Authorities disclosed that between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with water samples, have been collected “under chain-of-custody protocols for priority laboratory testing.” As part of immediate safety measures, the agencies have issued a strong public advisory, urging residents and the general public to avoid fish from the affected zone.
“The public is advised… Do NOT harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or adjacent areas until the FDA issues an ‘All-Clear’ notice,” the statement cautioned.
However, it assured consumers that “fish from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remains safe when cooked to an internal temperature of 63°C or above.” The public has also been encouraged to report any sightings of dead or distressed fish to the FDA hotline or the nearest office.
Additionally, individuals who may have already consumed fish from the area and are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation have been advised to seek immediate medical care and disclose possible exposure. Authorities say further updates will be communicated as investigations progress, urging the public to rely solely on official channels for accurate information.
