Real Madrid have officially reappointed José Mourinho as head coach, with the 63‑year‑old agreeing to a three‑year contract that begins when the squad reconvenes for pre‑season training on 13 July. To secure his return, the club paid Benfica £13m (€15m) in compensation, bringing Mourinho back to the Bernabéu 13 years after his first tenure ended. The move fulfills a pledge by club president Florentino Pérez, who had vowed to rehire Mourinho if re‑elected earlier this month.
Pérez, 79, who has led Real Madrid since 2009, defeated challenger Enrique Riquelme—an energy magnate—by winning 65% of the vote. His victory cleared the way for Mourinho, who previously guided Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League titles, to rejoin a club that has lifted the trophy a record 15 times.
