The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has issued the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) a firm 48-hour deadline to address growing complaints about its prepaid metering system. The directive follows an emergency meeting between the regulator and the power distributor, prompted by widespread public concern over the unusually rapid depletion of prepaid electricity credits. PURC has instructed ECG to submit a detailed report explaining the root cause of the issue and outlining corrective measures being taken.
Speaking on Channel One News on Thursday, February 26, Acting Executive Secretary Dr. Shafic Suleman emphasised that the Commission’s foremost priority is safeguarding consumer interests. “The consumer must be protected, safeguarded and be able to have equal access to ECG and that is the focus. ECG is supposed to work timeously to solve the problem,” he stated.
While expressing optimism that ECG would comply within the stipulated period, Dr. Suleman cautioned that the regulator would not hesitate to invoke the necessary legal mechanisms if the power distributor fails to act. The move comes as pressure mounts on ECG to provide clarity and reassurance to customers who have demanded accountability over what they describe as unexplained reductions in prepaid credits.
