Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that approximately 950,000 Ghanaians exited multidimensional poverty between 2024 and 2025, attributing the progress to stronger economic performance and improved living conditions. Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, he noted that Ghana’s multidimensional poverty rate declined from 24.9% in the third quarter of 2024 to 21.9% during the same period in 2025.
“This simply means that about 950,000 Ghanaians moved out of multidimensional poverty in just one year,” he told lawmakers. Dr. Forson added that the gains were reinforced by labour market improvements, with unemployment falling from 13.7% in the first three quarters of 2024 to 12.8% over the corresponding period in 2025. He emphasized that the figures demonstrate how recent economic reforms are beginning to deliver tangible benefits in the lives of ordinary citizens.
“Behind these statistics are the hundreds of thousands of families who now enjoy better living conditions and greater hope for the future,” Ato Forson stated. Ato Forson further noted that Ghana is now recognised as the eighth-largest economy in Africa, saying the country’s recent economic performance has strengthened businesses, expanded opportunities and enhanced the government’s capacity to invest in social and economic development.
