UAE launches emergency relief for victims of Ghana’s June 29 floods

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched an emergency humanitarian operation to assist thousands of people affected by the devastating floods that struck Ghana on June 29. The intervention, announced in a Facebook post by UAE Times on Thursday, July 23, was initiated under the directives of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and is being coordinated through the UAE Aid Agency. According to the statement, the UAE is delivering essential food supplies and emergency shelter materials to families impacted by the disaster, as part of efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis.

The UAE emphasised that the initiative reflects its broader commitment to global relief and disaster response, reaffirming solidarity with communities affected by natural calamities worldwide. The June 29 floods, triggered by hours of torrential rainfall, caused widespread destruction across the Greater Accra, Volta, and Central regions, submerging entire communities, destroying homes and businesses, and severely damaging critical infrastructure.

The disaster affected more than 131,000 people, claimed 45 lives and displaced nearly 40,000 residents, leaving thousands of families in urgent need of food, shelter and other basic necessities. The UAE’s humanitarian assistance is expected to complement ongoing relief efforts by the Government of Ghana, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other humanitarian partners working to support affected communities and accelerate recovery efforts.
