You may incur military casualties if you use them – Dr. Rasheed Draman to Govt

The Executive Director of Africa Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEP), Dr. Rasheed Draman has stated that the military has no role in our democratic space. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament has vowed to protect its newfound majority status when the House resumes on Tuesday.

This development is despite a ruling by a five-member Supreme Court panel chaired by the Chief Justice freezing Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four MPs’ vacant seats over the switching of allegiance.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus after the Supreme Court ruling announced its members will return when sitting resumes given the pronouncement from the apex court of the land. The NDC caucus has raised concerns about potential military deployment in parliament due to possible tensions that may occur when the House reconvenes.

However, Speaking on Starr FM Midday News with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Draman emphasized that the military has no role in our democratic space. He further explained that the involvement of the military in parliamentary can lead to casualties which would possibly affect our democracy.

“If the military comes in again, maybe if the executive is not careful, there might also be casualties of this military interference in our democratic affairs. The military has no role and has no space near anything in our democratic space,” Dr. Draman stated. He also further explained that the military’s role is to protect the country and that the civilians should find a way to resolve their differences.
