Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on Ghanaians to use “dialogue and to try and use peaceful means, the rule of law to resolve our differences in the outcome of the 2024 general elections.
Speaker Bagbin also stressed the importance of unity and development for the nation’s progress.
The Speaker’s remarks follow the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) decisive victory, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, who has reclaimed the presidency with a significant parliamentary majority.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, suffered a substantial defeat, losing the presidency and several parliamentary seats.
In Speaker Bagbin’s Christmas and New Year message to Ghanaians, he reflected on the challenges Ghana has faced in governance, economic management, and democratic processes. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism that the lessons learned will pave the way for improved governance and performance in 2025.
The Speaker emphasized that national unity is crucial for Ghana’s progress, stressing that Ghanaians must work together and support one another to drive post-election development forward.
“I am happy that God has intervened in a rather very difficult elections in this country. None of us thought that this would be the outcome of the 2024 general elections. But as God will have it, it has happened. My call to every one of us is to accept the results in humility…To agree that this is how the Almighty God wants it to be and for us to reflect.
“To think deeply into our souls and ourselves to see what went wrong and what went right for each and every one of us and also for the country and for us to come together to build a nation because without a nation we are living in silos.
“We are living in tribes. We will be divided and that will give room for hatred and as you know the devil will play its role. I think it is important for us to come together. I think it is important for us to continue to be open to each other. I think it is important for us to dialogue and to try and use peaceful means, the rule of law to resolve our differences,” he stated.
