A tipper truck collided with a Sprinter bus at the Ofankor Barrier along the Accra–Kumasi Highway on Thursday morning, August 13, 2026, leaving five people feared dead and several others critically injured. The impact severely mangled the bus, trapping multiple passengers inside the wreckage.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), emergency teams were dispatched to the scene to rescue victims and provide urgent assistance. Rescue officers from the GNFS headquarters are employing cutting equipment to break into the twisted vehicle and reach those still trapped. While several passengers have sustained serious injuries, fatalities have also been recorded, though the exact number remains unconfirmed.
An ambulance has evacuated some of the injured, including a female passenger whose legs were reportedly severed in the crash. The GNFS has described the situation as volatile as personnel continue efforts to extricate victims and stabilise the scene. Traffic along the highway has been disrupted, with the main carriageway temporarily restricted to facilitate rescue operations.
Motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra have been advised to use the outer lane and exercise caution when approaching the area. The GNFS has urged road users to be mindful of emergency responders at the scene as rescue efforts continue.
