This election is about change, not interchange –JDM

In the final lap of the campaign season, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama is reminding the Ghanaian electorate that the election next week is about political change needed to reset the country and not road infrastructure.

Mr Mahama’s comments appear to be a veiled dig at President Akufo-Addo who has been commissioning completed projects in Accra and beyond including the Flower Pot and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges. Speaking at a campaign event at La Bawalashie in the Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency, he read a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, written by a leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Mr Gabby Otchere-Darko which warned the electorate not to “let the ruling party divert” their attention.

Mr Otchere-Darko had continued to say the impending election at the time was “about worsening unemployment, economic hardships, corrupt and incompetent leadership”. He continued that Ghanaians were going to vote “for change, not for an interchange”.

The NDC flag bearer, eight years on, rehashed his political opponent’s argument and presented them to rally attendees. “Don’t let them divert your attention, this election is about change, not an interchange. This election is about unemployment. This election is about economic hardship. This election is about corrupt and incompetent leadership. That is what this election is about,” former President Mahama said to cheers.

He noted that it was clear that the NPP “had failed” to live up to their mandate of making the lives of the people better. “In eight years,” he observed, “the NPP has taken Ghana ten years backwards.”
