Security personnel taking food ‘shameful’ – Domelevo

Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has condemned the public distribution of food during the Special Voting exercise on Monday, December 2, 2024, in Ayawaso West Wuogon. The incident, in which MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan was seen distributing packaged food to voters, sparked widespread outrage and led to an investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking at a public forum on “Curbing Illicit Financial Flows Through Accountable Governance: The Role of Media,” Domelevo described the act as “shameful,” particularly given the individuals involved.

He criticised the police and security officers for their failure to prevent such behaviour, questioning their moral authority to arrest voters who may accept bribes in the upcoming general elections. He also expressed his dismay at the sight of security officers, including prison officers, standing in line with food in hand, calling it “very shameful.”

Domelevo reiterated that such actions should not be tolerated and welcomed the OSP’s investigation into the matter. Domelevo stated, “The shame goes to our police and security officers. If they are collecting food, how will they have the moral authority to arrest voters who collect money to vote? If you accept GH₵100 in food, and I collect GH₵1,000 in cash, will you be able to arrest me?”.
