PURC summons ECG over prepaid unit concerns

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has summoned the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to an emergency meeting following widespread complaints that prepaid electricity units are depleting faster than expected under the latest Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) adjustment. Consumers say they are paying more for power, only for it to run out quickly, intensifying the financial strain on households and businesses.

In a letter dated February 25, 2026, PURC acknowledged extensive media coverage and public concerns over the issue. “Given the regulatory, technical, and consumer protection implications, and the potential impact on public confidence in the metering and vending systems, the Commission is convening an emergency meeting,” the letter stated.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 12:00 noon at the PURC GNAT Office in Accra. ECG is expected to provide a detailed technical briefing on the implementation of the revised tariff within its prepaid vending and metering systems.

Other agenda items include a report on vending data trends, meter update protocols, the nature and scale of consumer complaints, and measures currently in place to address the concerns.

The move underscores growing regulatory scrutiny over electricity pricing and consumer protection in Ghana’s power sector.
