Police arrest suspect linked to Kasoa shooting during 2024 polls

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended a suspect in connection with the shooting at the Odupongkpehe Polling Centre in Kasoa during the 2024 general election. The suspect, Mujahid Suraj, also known as Mims, went into hiding after firing a pump-action gun that injured a voter. According to eyewitness accounts reported by Citi News, Suraj had aimed at Tamimu Tanko, a constituency executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but missed his target and instead wounded a man who had come to cast his ballot.

While some observers attributed the incident to political tensions, others linked it to a personal feud between Suraj and Tanko. The Kasoa Divisional Command arrested Suraj on the night of Saturday, January 17, after intelligence revealed he had returned to his residence in the Odupongkpehe Zongo area of Kasoa. Sources within the police have confirmed the arrest to Citi News, adding that the suspect has been placed under investigation and will subsequently face prosecution.
