The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed that it has initiated steps to expel Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng after remarks he made in a television interview, where he described the party as “fake” and disassociated himself from its membership. Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who previously served as Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, made the comments during an appearance on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, 2026. In the interview, he criticised the current state of the party, insisting it no longer embodies the values of the NPP he once knew. “The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake.
From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he asserted. When asked whether he still considered himself a member of the party, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said he no longer associates with what he described as the current version of the NPP. “Not the fake one. The real one is there. It is a virtual thing. The members are in the background,” he stated. He also warned that re-electing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer would be a “trainwreck” for the NPP.
In response, the NPP, in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said it had taken serious exception to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks.
According to the statement, the former minister not only questioned the credibility of the party but also alleged that the NPP’s 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed the claims, declaring that it “categorically rejects Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s regrettable characterisation of the NPP and firmly refutes his unfounded and unsubstantiated assertions concerning the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary.”
The party maintained that the primary was organised in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner, earning broad acceptance from all participating candidates and members as a genuine reflection of the delegates’ will. It further condemned Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks and actions as deeply inappropriate, harmful to the party’s unity, and detrimental to its values and integrity. As a result, the NPP announced that it has activated the relevant constitutional provisions to initiate expulsion proceedings, emphasising that the process will be pursued strictly in line with due process.
