NPP risks internal fracture with early flagbearer poll – Vanderpuye

Nii Lante Vanderpuye, National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, has voiced concern over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to select its 2028 presidential candidate ahead of electing party executives, cautioning that the move could spark internal divisions. Appearing on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, January 29, Vanderpuye expressed confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances of winning the primary but emphasised that the timing and process of the election could affect the party’s planning and strategy in the run-up to the 2028 general elections.

“I hope the NPP primary will be peaceful and without problems. Bawumia is the one I expect to win. I want him to win because it will make the work easier for me in 2028,” he remarked. He explained that once a flagbearer is elected, their supporters typically dominate the formation of national, constituency, and branch executives, which he stated could lead to inequality among them.

“The action the NPP has taken… will cost them. What is going to happen is that the party will fracture,” Vanderpuye said. The NPP flagbearer primary is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, with contenders including Kennedy Agyapong, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Dr Bryan Acheampong.
