NPP flagbearer race: “I am the next Joshua to lead the party to victory,” – Yaw Adutwum

Yaw Osei Adutwum, a presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on delegates in the Ashanti Region to support his campaign. He has promised to focus on empowering grass-roots communities and leading the party to electoral success. During his campaign tour on Friday, November 28, 2025, he addressed delegates in Manhyia North, emphasising his commitment to strengthening party structures, supporting traders, and creating more opportunities for NPP members if he is elected as flagbearer.

Adutwum shared his plan to introduce grants aimed at helping both women and men traders to secure and grow their businesses. He stated that economic empowerment at the constituency level would be a central focus of his leadership agenda. Dr Adutwum, who served as the minister of education, also described himself as a leader ready to guide the party through its next phase, invoking biblical imagery to reassure delegates of his commitment.

“Our party will see real progress under my leadership. Ghana will experience the full impact of the interventions I will champion to end poverty and expand opportunity for every citizen. “I am in this race because I am committed to transforming our nation. I believe I am the Joshua of our time — ready to lead the NPP and Ghana into a new era of prosperity. I will not turn my back on you, and I will never abandon the vision we share for a better future.”

War on poverty

Adutwum emphasised the need for a national commitment to combat poverty by strengthening Ghana’s education system. He stated that the most effective way to transform lives and communities is to ensure that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education that prepares them for the future.

Adutwum highlighted that education is the “most powerful weapon” in the fight against poverty and the reduction of inequality. He declared, “It’s time we wage war on poverty through a strong and effective education system. If we get education right, everything else will fall into place, from job creation and innovation to national development.”

Home region advantage

Adutwu, the MP for Bosomtwe, also in the Ashanti Region, is seeking to leverage the political weight of Ashanti as he intensifies his campaign to become the NPP presidential candidate in the 2028 general election. The region, which has 47 constituencies, commands the largest bloc of delegates in the party and has long been regarded as the NPP’s most dependable stronghold.

It has also been decisive in internal contests, consistently delivering high numbers for preferred candidates. Adutwum, who was born in Bosomtwe, told delegates that the Ashanti vote has historically shaped the party’s success and will again play a defining role in selecting the next flagbearer.

He dismissed claims that appealing to his home region amounted to tribal politics, insisting that local support for familiar candidates was a global political phenomenon. “It is a fact that in politics, people vote massively for candidates from their own stock, both in Ghana and across the world. I am counting on you to push me to the presidency,” he said.
