No school authorised to charge feeding fees – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has clarified that it has not authorised any school to impose fees of any kind on students or parents, warning that institutions doing so are acting unlawfully. In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, GES urged the public to disregard what it described as unfounded claims circulating on social media and other platforms about the introduction of additional charges in schools.

The Service cautioned that schools allegedly collecting so-called “feeding fees” without approval are in breach of established policy and operating outside the mandate of management. “Management of the Ghana Education Service has not authorised or sanctioned any school to charge fees under any name or in any form from students or parents,” the statement stressed.

It added that any such practice is illegal and not backed by the leadership of the Service. “Nonetheless, any school found to be charging money under the guise of feeding fees, as alleged, is acting unlawfully and without the approval of Management,” it stressed. The GES reaffirmed the government’s continued commitment to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, stating that there has been no change in the policy direction and that efforts are underway to strengthen, rather than weaken, its implementation.

“Government’s commitment to not only maintain the Free SHS policy, but improve upon it, has not changed,” it said. The Service further warned that any attempt to undermine the policy, whether through misinformation or the covert imposition of fees on students, would be treated as contrary to national interest.

It also encouraged parents and students who are asked to pay any unauthorised fees to report such incidents to GES for investigation and appropriate action.
