NADMO warns of flooding as Weija Dam spill gates open

Authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of communities along the Weija Dam spillway in Accra on Monday, June 29, after operators opened three spill gates to release excess water. The Weija‑Gbawe office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said heavy inflows from the Nsawam area had pushed reservoir levels to the brink, forcing the release. Officials warned that the high‑intensity discharge could sharply worsen downstream flooding.

“Residents must leave low areas immediately — don’t wait to see the water. Move to higher ground,” NADMO urged in a statement. The agency called on communities to assist vulnerable residents, including the elderly and children, and advised evacuees to carry essentials such as ID documents, medication, phones, and chargers. It cautioned against crossing floodwaters: “Six inches can knock you down. Two feet can carry a car.”

At‑risk areas identified include Tetegu, Weija, SCC, Old Barrier, Oblogo, Mallam Junction, Aplaku, Bortianor, and parts of Dansoman and Sampah. Authorities provided emergency contact numbers and urged residents requiring assistance to reach the national emergency line 112 or NADMO response centres.

The controlled release comes as parts of Accra continue to experience flooding following heavy rainfall that has affected several communities in recent days.
