I will not be on the 2028 ballot – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, affirming that he will not participate in the 2028 elections. In a statement released from the Presidency, he emphasized that his decision to abstain from the electoral race would empower him to enforce fiscal discipline and eliminate the pattern of excessive spending during election years, which has historically led to economic crises.

During a recent three-day state visit to Singapore, where he engaged in bilateral discussions with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Mr. Mahama criticized the tendency of incumbent governments to circumvent fiscal safeguards in order to gain voter support. “I will not be a candidate in the next elections, and therefore I can maintain a strong stance on fiscal discipline,” he assured.

He highlighted significant economic improvements during his administration since returning to power after a decisive victory in the 2024 elections, citing a rapid decrease in inflation and interest rates, along with a notable appreciation of the cedi. Mr. Mahama’s remarks were made in response to ongoing claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he plans to seek a third term beyond his current and final mandate.

The discussions in Singapore centred on deepening economic cooperation and attracting investment between the two nations.
