Govt renegotiates legacy debt with IPPs to ensure energy sector sustainability

The government has restructured the legacy debt owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), addressing a major concern that threatened their operations. This move aims to ensure sustainability in the energy sector and achieve stability in the electricity supply. According to the Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, Herbert Krapa, the renegotiation of these debts positions Ghana for success.

During a visit to the Accra West Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Krapa urged the power distributor to regain public trust by swiftly addressing customer grievances related to meter acquisition and other issues. In a related development, ECG Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama dismissed claims that new smart meters being rolled out are designed to exploit customers.

This follows numerous complaints about the consumption rates of the smart meters being installed under the Loss Reduction Programme (LRP). Mahama assured customers that the smart meters are designed to improve accuracy and efficiency, not to exploit them.
