GES announces 2026/2027 academic calendar: Basic Schools to reopen September 8

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the official academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year, covering all basic schools—Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High. According to a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, the calendar specifies reopening and closing dates for all three terms, along with the scheduled dates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

First Term (15 Weeks)

According to the calendar, the first term will commence on Tuesday, 8th September 2026, and close on Thursday, 17th December 2026. Students will enjoy a mid-term break of two days on 5th and 6th November 2026. The first-term vacation will run from 18th December 2026 to 4th January 2027.

Second Term (12 Weeks)

The second term is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 5th January 2027, and end on Thursday, 25th March 2027. The vacation for the second term will run from 26th March 2027 to 19th April 2027.

Third Term (14 Weeks)

The third and final term will reopen on Tuesday, 20th April 2027, and close on Thursday, 22nd July 2027, marking the end of the 2026/2027 academic year.

BECE Dates

The Basic Education Certificate Examination has been scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 5th May to Wednesday, 12th May 2027.

Public Holidays and Mid-Term Breaks

The GES reminded all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year are to be observed accordingly. Additionally, a two-day mid-term break will be observed in each term for all basic schools. The Service urged all heads of schools, teachers, parents, and guardians to take note of these dates and ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and effective academic year.
