COCOBOD CEO Randy Abbey sues Abronye for defamation demanding GH¢20million damages

Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has filed a defamation lawsuit against Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, who is the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a writ submitted to the Accra High Court on August 26, 2025, Abbey is seeking GH¢20 million in damages.

He accuses Abronye of damaging his reputation through comments made on a radio show. Abbey claims that Abronye stated he visits cocoa farms accompanied by a chair brought from Accra. Additionally, he alleges that Abronye accused him on the same platform of replacing the Director of Finance at COCOBOD with the intent to steal funds from the organization, which would jeopardize the interests of cocoa farmers.

Injury to reputation

Randy Abbey refuted the assertions by Abronye, describing the statements by the politician as a calculated attempt to cause injury to his reputation and reduce his standing in the eyes of public.

“The defendant’s actions were undertaken with the intention of eroding the public trust and confidence that the plaintiff has built in his professional career fully aware that such false statements would result in irreparable harm to the plaintiff’s personal dignity,” the writ added. Apart from the damages, the COCOBOD CEO is also seeking an order from the court directed at Abronye for an unconditional retraction, unqualified apology and complete removal of the defamatory publication.”

Also, the plaintiff is seeking a perpetual injunction restraining Abronye or anyone acting on his behalf from publishing defamatory words against him.
