Bawumia wraps up 276-constituency tour ahead of Jan 31 NPP primaries

NPP flagbearer aspirant Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has wrapped up a nationwide tour of all 276 constituencies ahead of the party’s presidential primaries slated for Saturday, January 31, 2026. The tour follows the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, which ended the party’s eight-year administration. In the aftermath, the National Council initiated an early reorganisation strategy, beginning with the selection of a presidential candidate.

Dr. Bawumia officially launched his campaign, themed “Our Journey Together,” on October 15, 2025, in Sene East, Bono East Region. His tour spanned every constituency across the country, punctuated by breaks for official and public duties. According to his campaign team, the exercise aimed to connect with grassroots members, gather feedback, and deliberate on the party’s future direction after the 2024 elections.

During engagements across the country, Dr. Bawumia referenced the party’s electoral performance, including a decline of over two million votes compared to the 2020 elections. He attributed the outcome primarily to economic challenges and voter dissatisfaction and urged party members to avoid internal divisions.

He emphasised the need for unity, improved organisation, and collective responsibility as the party prepares for future elections. A key theme of the campaign was the welfare of grassroots party members. Dr. Bawumia held meetings with constituency executives, polling station officers, electoral area coordinators, and party activists, during which he outlined proposals aimed at improving engagement and recognition at the constituency level.

Among the issues highlighted were regular interactions between national leadership and grassroots members and measures to acknowledge the contributions of party workers. The campaign was conducted under guidelines that emphasised decorum and respect among aspirants. Dr. Bawumia consistently encouraged supporters to focus on policy ideas, experience, and party cohesion, noting the importance of internal unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Throughout the tour, he referenced his political career, including his involvement with the party since 2008, his role during the party’s years in opposition, participation in the 2012 election petition, and his tenure as Vice President from 2017 to 2025. He also cited initiatives associated with his time in office, such as the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, and the Zipline medical drone delivery programme.

The campaign recorded public endorsements from party executives, Members of Parliament, grassroots organisers, and former party officials across several regions, including Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern, and Oti regions.

Dr. Bawumia concluded the tour in the Ashanti Region, thanking party members for their participation and urging delegates to conduct themselves peacefully during the primaries. He stated that efforts would be made to unify the party after the internal election and refocus on preparations for the 2028 polls.

The NPP presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026.
