The National Peace Council has strongly condemned the recent surge of violence in senior high schools, following six reported cases of student-related assaults within just one week. In a statement issued on February 25, 2026, the Council described the incidents as deeply troubling and urged the Ghana Education Service, parents, and other stakeholders to take immediate steps to restore discipline and ensure safety in schools. The cases, recorded across at least four regions, involved multiple institutions.
In the Central Region, a student from Obrachire Senior High School was hospitalised after being attacked during a district athletics competition. At the Super Zonal sports festival in Koforidua, Eastern Region, two serious incidents were reported: a female student of Osino Presbyterian SHS was allegedly gang raped, while a final-year student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed. In Greater Accra, teachers at West Africa Senior High School were assaulted by students from Frafraha Community Senior High School.
In Cape Coast, a final-year student of Adisadel College was attacked by six students from Aggrey Memorial School during an inter-collegiate sports festival. The Council noted that the Ghana Police Service has arrested most of the suspects involved. While acknowledging that the Ghana Education Service has condemned the incidents and announced disciplinary action, the Council supported a directive from the Ministry of Education for investigations to be fast-tracked.
It also called for improved security in schools and at sporting events, as well as stronger counselling services to address indiscipline. The Council appealed to parents and guardians to take a more active role in promoting discipline, tolerance and respect among students.
The Council said it would continue its sensitisation programmes in schools on peace, tolerance and non-violent ways of resolving grievances. It urged the Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders to strengthen disciplinary measures and adopt policies to make schools safe for learning.
